How many of you have jumped with your eyes closed? I have heard that this is a great excercise for "getting the feel" of jumping, but I'm a little hesitant to try it myself...

I usually practice dressage with my eyes closed. I usually drop my inside shoulder and tense upi the outside one so my instructor got me to do sitting trot and close my eyes. It really helps you relax and it gets you into the feeling of the horse to. I will try jumping like this, sounds fun.

I suggested it didn't I? I do it all the time. I like to jump with no reins too, and with no stirrups... But I am a bit nutty I spose....

Oh, you only need to close your eyes just before the jump... Not like wear a blindfold or something!!!

That slightly obvious, I would miss the jump lol! Have you ever put a blindfold on your horse? Have you ever tried sitting back instead of leaning forward over a jump? It is soooo wierd. Remeber to let the reins go loose so you dont pull the horses teeth out though!

We used to do that excercise at my old riding school. We would build a lane of about five jumps and then tie a knot in our reins and jump without hands. Then we used to do it without sturrups and then we would do it with our eyes closed. It was great fun and taught you to feel what the horse was doing.

I think it's good to with your reins too... So you can feel the horses mouth, helps prevent so many jumping bad habits.

it works! but wouldn't do it every day! stops u from anticipating the jump and jumping before your horse. feels a bit wierd at first! just close your eyes when u straight and make sure u have jumped the jump before so your horse doesn't spook at it

Yes, moo, it's just an exercise and is just there for when we forget to feel and think too hard.

It's a brilliant excersise. I have been doing it with Star as he is new to jumping and takes off when I don't expect him to. He has a huuuge jump and sometimes I think he'll take off into the sky like a pegusus! I got so used to Rags' jump that I couldnt get the hang of Star's jump. Closing my eyes before a jump has basically helped my mind to "shut up and stop interfering" and I've become much more comfortable with Star's jumping style.

ooh My previous instructer had us jumping with no stirrups, eyes closed and no reins. was so much fun and really good for balance and getting a feel for what your horse is doing. It has helped me so much now. (also if you cant see the jump you dont know how big it really is)

Its very good! Especially in gymnastics where a lot of riders get ahead of the horse or overjump. I close my eyes when jumping a gymnastic in equitation!! ;D
