I have a 3yr old Appy cross. She's been ridden in a Jaquima up till now.
Would it be sensible to start her in a KK Ultra, or should I try an even milder snaffle or straight bar?

I am very blonde today. What is a Jaquima?

Spanish/Peruvian Hackamore. Almost like a Bosal.

Oh. Ok. What has she been doing under saddle?

I would suggest the softest possible - either a double link snaffle like a french snaffle, KK or a straight rubber. I use a straight Naithe snaffle on both my TB's and they love it. You really shouldn't need much more than that.

I will always recommend a full cheek snaffle for a youngster. It is like training wheels. I use them on almost all my horses.

Sabal is only 4yo and has an extremely soft mouth. We use a french link snaffle on her.

Okay great, thanx! I'll try the French Link as it's a bit cheaper than the KK if she doesn't like it, otherwise the Nathe.
She's only been under saddle for about 4 months, mostjy hacking out, so she doesn't know a lot yet!

Kiepie, just a word of advice. Before you bit her, have the EDT come out and check her for wolf teeth and to make sure that her caps are off properly. Even at 3 they could have developed sharp edges or chewed a stone and damaged a tooth. Youngsters develop wolf teeth by 3 and by checking properly you can avoid a whole host of problems. I dont back my youngsters this young but they are checked by the EDT from as young as I possibly can.

Ok thanx, Buffy, I'll definitely get my dentist to have a look at her.
I'm not going to do a lot with her as she is very young (I just bought her), I believe in taking it slow and proper as I don't want to spoil her, she probably is the last horse I've bought (famous last words I know!).

Does the horse need a bit ? How about trying a bitless bridle ? We have two horse going very sweetly in the bitless bridles. Shimmer is only 4 years old.
