Does this horse get worked at all? I assume he lives out. How long ago did you deworm all the horses?
Some horses require deworming twice if they have a serious worm infestation. Usually I would deworm once and then again about 4 weeks later if the horse suffers badly from worms.
Have you had his teeth checked? How old is he? All these factors could lead to a problem with a horse gaining weight.
The grazing might seem wonderful, but depending on the area and type of grass, there may actually be no nutritional value in the type of grass that is growing in your area. Even though it may look nice and green, does not mean to say that there is any goodness in it for your horse.
The tranquil feed is excellent for putting weight on horses, and I wouldn't increase the amount you are feeding - 6kg is fine. I would possibly add some lucerne to his feed, say about 2 "biscuits" a day.
As you say your other horses are putting on weight, which would make me think that this horses problem would be more worm/teeth or age related.
Oh yes, you say that the horse is in with other horses. Are you around them when they eat there concentrates etc. Maybe one of the other horses are bullying him and chasing him away from his food. I usually like to separate horses when they are fed their concentrates in order to avoid bullying by other horses.

Hey Manda, is this walt? Was so sad when we saw him yesterday, but I know you will get him looking great in no time! Don't think his teeth could be the problem, as he had his teeth done a few months ago. My big concern is that is ill. Ali mentioned that she wanted to get Prof Van der berg out to see him and give him a proper check up. May advice in the meantime would be to up his roughages, or rather as Sparky suggested lucerne specifically. How has his appetite been? He also just didn't seem his usual self when we saw him, have you experience that? I would organise a vet to come see him as soon as possible, so that you can rule out any illness. If he gives walt the all clear, then re-asses his feed, possibly add something like full fat soya to his feed to help him pick up weight and possibly canola oil or sunflower oil, as his coat was so dull, which to me was just another indication that he isn't well.
Don't worry it certaintly isn't anything you are doing wrong, as he has only been with you for a few days, and see-ing your other horses so healthy and strong, I don't doubt that you will have walt looking just as good in no time! Also just a quick question, what do you treat the horses with againts ticks?
Sparky maybe you can explain quickly about frontline that you use on your horses? Can't remember if you said you used the spray or the little drops and how often? But that will go some way to protect all the horses against billiary. Keep us posted on how he does and what the vet says, I know you and walt will be fine!

I use the frontline spray on my horses. Works like a BOMB!! ;D Manda, I would go with what Bee said. She knows the horse and if she thinks he didn't look himself, then its quite possible he is ill. Maybe just get a vet out to have a look at him.

Good idea to get a vet to check him over. Is he eating at all - maybe it is billiary.
Yes, the frontline spray works absolutely wonderfully. I haven't had a tick problem since I've been using it. I just spray around my horses fetlocks and on his tail - so far this has kept the ticks away.
Have you taken his temperature - maybe he has a virus. A few years ago my TB also went through a phase where he wasn't eating and looking miserable. The vet couldn't find anything wrong, but I gave him a vitamin B12 injection and he was fine in no time.
Maybe when your vet comes suggest a vitamin B12 as well, just to help him pick up and fight off whatever is wrong with him.
I agree with Bee, I would also add maybe full fat soya to his feed to help him pick up weight again.
Please keep us updated!!

Bee, you talking about Koos van den Berg? He is excellent! Especially with horses. He does all the horses on the farm I was on in Villiersdorp. He is a true genius and such a cool person! Really knows what he is doing!

My horse went through the same thing!! Dull coat, not himself, not eating properly and just very worrying and stressfull time!
I called the vet out and it turned out he had a cold, she gave him vitamin injections and he was fine within 24 hours, sometimes a tempertature causes horses to stop eating and loose condition.
Since then I have put him on oil, added chaff lucurne to his feed and starting with burga fat tommorow.
Bee, how are you doing?! Its Medusa's mom! Are you still riding these days?
Good luck, he'll be fine!
