Hi. I've just moved from JHB to the South Coast and my horse is now stabled at home. I am mixing my own feed but am becoming increasingly worried that he's not getting the right stuff in the right proportions. The problem is, that the feed store doesn't have much to offer. I am feeding him equal parts ( in weight) of bran, hominey chop and milled lucern and one handfull of molasses meal. Also a teaspoon of bone meal for the calcium. That's about 2.5 kg in total. He's getting that twice a day and is out eating grass all day and as much hay as he kann manage at night. However he is on the skinny side and won't pick up any weight. Worming teeth etc. all checked. My question is: does this mix sound ok? Should I perhaps rather buy a mixed feed (they have ROMIX Equifeed). My neighbour is feeding his horses this and they look fantastic. Also is it better to feed molasses meal or the treakly stuff? I'd put in some germ meal but they don't have it here. The more I read up on it the more confusing the subject becomes... Please help!
