A person at the yard I am at mixed a fly spray of rooibos, vinegar and citronella!!!!!! It seems to work, but surely the vingar can eat the skin??

the vinegar wont burn the skin but it will definitely fade the coat in the sun! Also be careful of any essential oils such as citronella, lavendar, tea tree etc as it can cause a photo sensitive reaction on the horse's skin.

Use Apple Cider vinegar it is milder

I use the following mix on my Friesian - works like a bomb! Especially with AHS doing the rounds. I combine this with Equiline's Fly Repel. I put the Fly Repel on in the mornings and the citronella mix in the evenings.
Liquid Paraffin (400ml) Apple Cider (100 - 150ml) Citronella (medium size bottle) Lemon Juice (100 - 150ml) Water (500ml)
Only thing is that it does make your horse a bit greasy so u'r gonna have to bath him every once in a while.
