Hi everyone. About 3 months ago I received one of the worst rescue cases I have ever seen... and I have seen many! Please if anyone has any advice orn ideas I would love to hear it.
I was told about a young paint mare that was one the way to the abbatoir but who was in such a bad state that my contact at the abbatoir said it was not going to be worth slaughtering her. Obviously I told them to drop her by me. She weighed 280 kg ( she is over 15hh!) Her hooves had grown to about 74cm but hadnt completely curled requiring that she walk in a crouched position with her back legs almost parallel to the ground and most of her body was raw and open due to mange.
She has made amazing progress with a beautiful coat and almost normal body weight however her hoofs are completely deformed and her tendons have been stretched. Both the vet and farrier say they have never seen a horse in her state and are not completely sure what to do. I dont know if I should put her down or give her a chance as she is only 4 and never experienced what life should be like. Her personality has completely morphed from being shy and flinching every time someone approached to being confident and begging for treats. She is still in pain, however I think it iis lessening, she needs to be bandaged and medicated everyday. Does anyone have any suggestions?

omw that sounds so terrible. i would not know what to do so I dont have any advise. what does your vet suggest? if you chose to euthenaise her, do it knowing that you have shown her a good life over the last few months. you have restored her faith in humans and given her more in this short time than I would imagine she has ever felt.

Great news! She has shown remarkable improvement in the last 2 weeks, She barely lies down, is walking easier and overall seems a much happier horse. My vet believes that she is doing so well that it is no longer neccesary to consider euthenasia. It is still going to be a long process but at least she is no longer suffering so much.
Thank you equinechild, hopefully one of these days she will really be able to enjoy life!

Hi, I am a firm believer of natural remedies and natural medicine. I suggest you get your baby on Tissue salts, locally available from dischem, you can give her nrs 4 which is for inflamation, 3 & 8 which will help with the pain, 12 which is just a combin to strengthen her. you can give if to her in her feed, dosage is about 5-10 tablets for horses with their feed.
Hope this helps!!!!
