Let's not get personal on this one, it's not necessary. Valid points were made by both sides, so let's shake hands and move on. I must admit, now you've made me curious to see this video for myself - will have to go to Riders and try and hire it for this weekend!

No problem - you made some valid points, certainly piqued my curiosity. Your apology was unnecessary, but thanks anyway. Have a good ride.

in europe and the uk showjumping riders have to be able to ride an elementary dressage test before they are 'licensed' to ride in the higher grades. I wonder how many of our A grade riders would be able to do that?

That would be a good idea Anine, I am so tired of horses that are Elementary "at home". If they can do the work lets see it in front of a judge, you dont have to win the class but show us what you and the horse can do.

Who are the horses in the video? Unfortunately I haven't seen it so can't comment on the riding in the video. Now I'm also curious!I agree with Saxon though. What's the point of having a training video if the horses do everything perfectly? You want to see mistakes, you want to see errors, you want to see problems! The point being made is that the RIDERS, whether they were on novice or advanced horses, had no idea of how to correctly ride smaller jumps with placing poles etc. at either a trot or a canter. Savannah, seeing that Rob Hoekstra and Tiny Clapham are 2 riders in the video, and that both of them regularly come to SA, why don't you mention it to them when next they are out?

Salinero, you crack me up...
I don't want to fight with Dizzy over this but it's SO easy to sit on the side lines and critique a video / jumping round.
I don't care HOW advanced those riders were. All I ride is babies and there's nothing like babies to make you look as if you know squat (which I do when it comes to jumping as I'm terrified when I jump).
As for Tossy : I've seen her lessons, this chick KNOWS her flatwork!!

Nobody is denying their talent or questioning their riding ability, the fact of the matter is, what has happened to going back to basics?

Savannah, the point is that the original post wasn't aimed at discussing basics, but rather at pointing fingers at very talented and respected riders, and suggesting that they didn't know any.
I've heard the argument before by Dizzy that A grades are no good, blah blah fishpaste. As I said, I DON'T want to fight with her about it because it's her opinion. The problem is that it's not an opinion other people share, and you, for one, got your knickers in a twist about it. A Grade jumping is EVERYTHING to do with good flatwork. I wonder how many A grade riders have been asked how much flat work they do. I think you'll find the answer quite surprising. Instead of watching a video in a vaccuum and coming to the conclusion that "A grade = no flatwork", consider whether, perhaps, there are other factors...possibly the fact that the riders were DEMONSTRATING bad riding, so that we, the little people watching the video, could learn?
Just a suggestion.

And my suggestion at this point would be that everyone agree to disagree on this point, you all have valid reasons and your own opinions, let's leave it there before it gets more personal than it already has.

I personally don't think you can ride A grade successfully without good flatwork!

well i would like to add firstly that flat work is really good for your jumping especially in jump-offs... it give you more controll with the horse over tight corners and getting him/her to go off your leg and secondly is it soo hard to do flat work before jumping it can be fun if you do new things every time ... be creative and i do flat work and stuff be for jumping and it makes me jump a heack of a lot better...
